Final Reflection

So, it's over. The final numbers were 529km walked and 10,320m of ascent in the 20 days. It was wonderful to see so much of Switzerland and, more importantly do it for a great cause. Please feel free to continue to donate up until the deadline of 25th July. The needs of those affected by the Crans-Montana fire will last for many years into the future and any help we can offer via this effort will be appreciated. Thank you to everyone who supported me in this effort over the past 3 weeks.

Day 20:Mustair-Piz Chavalatsch

An 8km ascent at an average of just under 20%. Slow and steady was what was needed and, thankfully, these days I am more yak than goat. The path wound through trees and then meadows. Then I was above the treeline and saw the summit. A last dig into the reserves took me on to the summit ridge and then I was stood on the top. The most eastern point is about 200m south of the peak in a little bump so I visited that to make sure. The views were stunning and journey’s end had been reached.

02.07.2026

Day 19: Il Fuorn - Mustair

Well wrapped up and leaving the wonderful Il Fuorn hotel behind, I headed east along the unspoiled Fuorn river. Views were stunning. A final push took me over the Fuorn Pass and down into my final valley of Val Mustair. From there it was a lovely walk through green fields and woods until, finally, I caught a glimpse of my ultimate objective - the Piz Chavalatsch at 2750m above. What a final day I have in store for me. It was then a gentle descent into the border village of Mustair.

01.07.2026

Day 18: Susch - Il Fuorn

I left Susch early and followed the En upstream to Zernez. I paused as morning storms were forecast but there seemed to be a gap so pressed on following the trail into the National Park. Then the heavens opened and it was a cold and wet ascent up to my hotel at Il Fuorn where I could dry off. Switzerland has one National Park which may seem strange for such a beautiful country. The reason is that the bar for qualification is so high that no one has followed. It really is an unspoiled wilderness.

Day 17: Davos - Susch

Today was the biggie!!! Nearly 30km of distance and 900m up. Largely because there is no settlement between these two places! Another early start and it was a long and gruelling 13km climb up to the Flüelapass (2390m) accompanied largely by the sound of the river, cowbells and the occasional vehicle on the road. The pass marked my entry into Engadine. The descent was also long and features some encounters with boulder fields, horses, brooding cows and rain. Yes, rain! More forecast tomorrow.

29.06.2026

Day 16: Küblis - Davos

20km walking and 1300m of ascent sent me deep into the mountains. I was lucky with the weather as it was probably 10C cooler than for the last 2 weeks. The first section was 800m straight up and into the heart of the Klosters ski area. From there I had amazing views down on to the resort favoured by the British Royals. After some more climbing I topped out at 1850m and was then met with the beautiful sight of the Davosersee. Davos was a very welcome destination ahead of the Flüelapass tomorrow.

28.06.2026

Day 15: Bad Ragaz - Kublis

I set out early given the heat and was thankful for more cloud cover which made things much easier. Today’s theme was following rivers. First, with the Rhine as it begins its journey north and then, heading east and south with the Landquart, which flowed past me for most of the morning. I passed through Landquart town itself, Schiers and then arrived at Kublis. In doing so, I entered Graubunden, which is my 12th and final Canton. It is Switzerland’s biggest by area but very sparsely populated.

27.06.2026

Updated Target

Such was the generosity of so many people that I hit my original target of 8,000 Chfs with 6 days to go. I have therefore increased it to 10,000 Chfs. Thanks to everybody. You have been incredibly kind and supportive.

27.06.2026

Day 14: Unterterzen-Bad Ragaz

A 30km walk out of the Walensee, following the Seez and, eventually, arriving in the Rhine valley. I passed through Walenstadt at the east end of the lake and then the towns of Flums, Mels, and Vinters before arriving in the thermal spa resort of Bad Ragaz. About 8km from the end, I got some great views of the tiny principality of Liechtenstein. It was also great to see the Rhine and get a first look at Switzerland’s eastern border. Tomorrow, I start into the Alps! Wish me luck!

26.06.2026

Day 13:Reichenburg-Unterterzen

The last 3 Canton day! 25km began with leaving Reichenburg in Schwyz and quickly moving into Glarus. I then followed the Linth river down to Weesen and made my way along the south shore of the Walensee. This 20km lake has 2000m peaks as a background and is a beautiful clear blue-green. The path went up and down over various bluffs and outcrops before I headed upwards at Murg, now in Saint Gallen Kanton and climbed to Quarten, near Unterterzen. The views from the hotel are simply stunning!

24.06.2026

Day 12:Richterswil-Reichenburg

24km starting Richterswil on a calm morning and followed the lakeside path down to Freienbach. There were lots of people (and dogs!) taking advantage of the conditions before the heat forms for the day. Doing this took me into Schwyz (my 9th), one of the 3 Cantons that formed the first Swiss Confederation in 1291. I am sure you know the other 2! I then passed through Lachen (with its two towered church) and then finally followed the main road to Chur through Siebnen and, eventually, Reichenburg.

23.06.2026

Day 11: Sins - Richterswil

32km and 500m up in another 3 Canton Day. This morning I left Sins in Aargau very early and headed across the amazing covered toll bridge that crosses the Reuss River and took me into Zug. Famous, of course, for its low taxes so I should not have been surprising that the last 2km before the Zurich border were a huge Business Park! It was then a wonderful, if hot, walk into my 8th canton and down to the cool and tempting waters of the Zurichersee at Richterswil.

22.06.2026

Day 10: Sursee - Sins

Today’s 28km began with a climb out of Sursee on a beautiful morning and stunning views of the lake. Just after I passed through lovely Hildisrieden, I crossed the invisible line of longitude that means I am now in E Switzerland. What a good feeling that was! Then, with a few snack stops it was on to Hochdorf before crossing into Aargau (No. 6) and then through Altwil down to Sins. All the time the Bernese Oberland disappeared into the distance and Mt Pilatus behind Luzern looming high!

21.06.2026

Day 9: Dürrenroth - Sursee

I arrived in the Kanton of Luzern. The fifth so far. More specifically in Sursee which is a pretty little town about 20km north west of the city. After yesterday’s beauty, today was a bit more direct and flat but I made 30km on the trek. I passed lot of lovely little villages, each with their own church. Progress continues as planned and I am coming up to the half way mark on distance. I was even bizarrely comforted to see the planes in the sky leaving Zurich so we must be making progress!

20.06.2026

Day 8: Schönbühl - Dürrenroth

29km almost due east and I started at 7am to escape the heat. After a few kms crossing the major Bern-Zurich travel arteries, I arrived at pretty Burgdorf and the river Emme. From there was 17km of magic. Quite some climbing (630m) but worth it. Emmental is simply amazing. Rolling green hills and fields with the amazing snowy Bernese Oberland to the south. Staying in a lovely village which, of course, has a cheese factory!

19.06.2026

Day 7: Flamatt - Schönbühl

My route mainly took me across Bern. First I said goodbye to Fribourg and then moved SW to NE across Bern. It’s beautiful and was super busy as the summer carnival begins today. Difficult to believe there is a $100 Billion of gold stored right there in the middle of the city!!! Then I headed northwest to the lovely little village of Schönbühl. Today was, again, very hot but I was lucky that there are woods either side of Bern providing cover. On to Emmental tomorrow. Cheese anyone?

18.06.2026

Day 6: Avenches - Flamatt

A 28km 3 Canton Day. Rising out of Avenches with its amazing Roman remains (and the Nespresso factory), I left Vaud and walked through some beautiful countryside in Fribourg before crossing the invisible “Röstigraben” that runs through Switzerland. Then it was into Bern before zigzagging between the two along the Sense river and settling down for the night in Flamatt, about 10km from Bern. Laupen, with its beautiful castle and market square, was a highlight. Very Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!

17.06.2026

Day 5: Lucens to Avenches

Today’s 28km was literally straight north from Lucens passing through Payerne with its amazing Clunian Abbey and home to the Swiss Air Force and then on to Avenches. Some beautiful churches along the way. I also passed between Vaud and Fribourg 6 times!!! Since this is a direct democracy country, communes can (within reason) elect to be in specific Cantons that may create these “enclaves” within another. Avenches, where I am, is thus a Vaudois island in Fribourg!

16.06.2026

Day 4: Croisettes - Lucens

The sun shone and there was enough shade in the woods to make the 29km pleasant. I finished the climb up from Lausanne (900m) and then through the woods before a descent into the Broye valley to Moudon and Lucens. The latter being the site of Europe’s worst nuclear accident in 1969 when an underground reactor partly melted down. All seems fine now. It was fun clearing the water shed. Before, all water runs towards the Rhone and the Med. Now it is all running towards the Rhine and the North Sea.

15.06.2026

Day 3: Rolle - Croisettes

Nearly 32km with a serious sting of ascent in the tail. I restarted from Rolle and passed through Allaman and Etoy where Seàn Meehan and Marco Volpi both took time out to wish me well. Thanks guys! Then on through St Prex, Morges and St Sulpice before finally Lausanne. It’s a beautiful city with a stunning cathedral but VERY hilly. From the lake to the top is nearly 350m of climbing so I was glad to see journey’s end!

13.06.2026

Day 2: Pont Céard - Rolle

I continued along 26km of the north coast of Lac Léman (Geneva). Mont Blanc shined down on almost all of the route which took me through my home commune, Tannay. Then on to lovely Nyon and towns of Prangins, Gland and, finally, Rolle. I also entered “La Côte”, one of the wine areas of the region. Interestingly, I passed through the “Toblerone Trail”, the stone fortified barriers set up to deter the Nazis from attacking neutral Switzerland. On it, is the famous “Villa Rose”, mocked up as a house.

15.06.2026

Day 1: Chancy - Pont-Céard

There were no problems getting down to the border despite the G7 security restrictions. So I did start at the most westernmost point in Switzerland. It was a long (31km) but relatively flat day. Actually, there was quite a lot of reminiscing as I passed through Bernex, Confignon and Chambesy where we had lived before moving to Vaud. Geneva looked a little odd with all the shops boarded up ahead of the expected anti-capitalist riots that accompany the G7 - despite it not even being in Switzerland

Please note although the target is now hit, donations continue to be very welcome. Every Franc will help those impacted by the fire.

Hi there,

Starting on June 12th, from the furthest western tip of Switzerland in Chancy to its easternmost point , the peak of Piz Chavalatsch, I am walking 500+ kilometres and ascending 9,000 metres+ in 20 days. This journey is a personal challenge I have always wanted to take on, but more importantly, it is a walk in support of the victims of the New Year’s Day tragedy in Crans-Montana.

Why I am walking:

On January 1st, 2026, a devastating fire in a bar claimed 41 young lives. As a father of two teenage daughters, it breaks my heart to know that half of those who never came home that night were under the age of 18—youths with their whole lives ahead of them.

While the headlines have faded, the aftermath is still affecting many. Families lost loved ones and over 100 people were injured, many with severe burns requiring years of specialized medical care and skin grafts.

Where the money goes:

All funds from this "HappyPot" will be donated directly to the Beloved Foundation (Fondation Bien-Aimée). This official foundation, chaired by former Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard, provides long-term financial, medical, and psychological support to the victims and their families, including ensuring that the survivors have the resources they need for a lifetime of recovery.

How you can help:

Every kilometre I walk is a step toward helping a survivor rebuild their life. Whether it’s 5 CHF or 50 CHF, your contribution via credit card, bank transfer (or TWINT for those in Switzerland) goes straight to supporting those who were forever changed by that night.

  • 50 CHF – Supports an impacted family member.

  • 200 CHF – Helps with psychological therapy for those affected.

  • 500 CHF – A major boost for the long-term recovery of a survivor.

Needless to say, I am covering all incurred expenses to complete the challenge myself so ALL your donations go to the Beloved Foundation.

Thank you in advance for standing with the families of all those affected by this terrible event.

Peter

Bonjour,
