Cyclone Ditva hit Sri Lanka in late November 2025, the worst natural disaster the country has faced in years. Due to its sudden development from the south (closer to Sri Lanka), where cyclones do not usually occur, and its slow movement along the eastern coast, Cyclone Ditva caused widespread destruction, loss of life and property damage across the island.
1. Meteorological background and track
Cyclone Ditva formed on 27 November 2025 when a deep depression near the southeast coast of Sri Lanka intensified into a cyclone. It was named “Ditva”, a name suggested by Yemen.
Unusual origin: Although cyclones usually form far out in the Bay of Bengal, the formation of Ditva was very close to Sri Lanka and in an unusual location, making it challenging to accurately predict its track and strength.

- You will receive confirmation by e-mail and payment will be made within 1 to 5 working days, depending on your bank.
