Waves of Freedom: a citizen initiative supported by a HappyPot fundraiser

The birth of an association in Switzerland

On July 11, 2025, the association Waves of Freedom (WOFA) was founded in Switzerland, and on the same day an online fundraiser on HappyPot was launched to support its first actions. The initial goal: to raise funds for a flotilla of five boats symbolizing international solidarity.

A project interrupted, a fundraiser that continues

Although the flotilla project was later stopped, the initiative of Waves of Freedom has not disappeared. The association continues its activities and the HappyPot fundraiser remains open, allowing anyone who wishes to contribute to this mission of solidarity.

Who is Waves of Freedom?

Waves of Freedom Switzerland (WOFA) is a citizen association, independent of any political party or institution, acting within the Global Sumud Flotilla movement.
It was founded by Dr. Hicham El Ghaoui, who brings humanitarian experience and field expertise to the initiative.

WOFA brings together volunteers, civil actors, and activists from more than 40 countries around a shared goal: exercising non-violent action for solidarity, human rights, and international justice.

The association highlights four core values:

  • the primacy of human rights
  • non-violent action
  • political independence
  • the will to act when fundamental rights are threatened

The initial project: a flotilla of solidarity

At its creation, WOFA aimed to assemble five boats as part of an international flotilla. The purpose was to deliver essential aid—medicine, food, infant formula—while sending a strong symbolic message of civil solidarity.

WOFA coordinated logistics: crews, humanitarian cargo, partnerships, and diplomatic outreach where possible. The association also announced its work to obtain or charter boats to support this initiative.

A statement mentioned that a civilian flotilla was scheduled to depart from Switzerland in the summer of 2025 with humanitarian cargo, supported by WOFA.

The HappyPot fundraiser: a tool for support and transparency

From the very beginning, a fundraiser was created on HappyPot to collect the funds needed to make the mission possible.
Even though the flotilla was stopped, the fundraiser remains active to support the ongoing efforts of the association.

Through this fundraiser, anyone can participate and add their contribution to a larger collective movement.

Why a local online fundraiser?

For a Swiss association like WOFA, using a local platform such as HappyPot provides clear advantages:

  • Swiss-friendly payments (TWINT, bank transfers, cards)
  • transparency in fund management
  • stronger visibility in Switzerland
  • easy sharing across social media

It also gives donors the reassurance that the initiative is rooted in a credible, local framework.

Persistence despite obstacles

Even though the flotilla project was stopped, WOFA’s vision has not faded. The association continues to mobilize support, raise awareness, prepare future logistics, and sustain a citizen-based solidarity movement.

WOFA communicates that it is the Swiss delegation of the Sumud movement, that it adheres to non-partisan and non-religious principles, and that it relies on the engagement of citizens from diverse backgrounds.

The team behind WOFA

WOFA’s team is composed of volunteers from various fields: doctors, engineers, journalists, and ordinary citizens.
They pursue this project not for ideology, but out of conscience and a desire to act.

How to get involved or support

Ways to contribute include:

  • donating through the HappyPot fundraiser
  • sharing the information with your network
  • joining awareness campaigns
  • offering logistical or technical support
  • volunteering with the association as needed

Every gesture, big or small, helps sustain the citizen energy around this project.

Conclusion

The story of Waves of Freedom shows how an association can emerge with a strong ideal of solidarity and set the foundation for an ambitious project. Even though the initial flotilla has not taken place, the HappyPot fundraiser continues to turn this vision into concrete action.
